Types of Curved Spine Disorders

There are three main classifications of spinal curvature disorders. When viewed from the side, a normal spine has gentle curves. These small curves work as shock absorbers, cushioning the movements of the body. When the spine has more severe curves, it can cause a number of issues. The three types of spinal curvature disorders are:

  • Lordosis- The spine of a person with lordosis curves in at the lower back.
  • Kyphosis- A person with kyphosis has a condition that causes the spine to curve at the upper back.
  • Scoliosis- A spine affected by scoliosis curves sideways, usually forming an "S" or "C" shape.

Causes of a Curved Spine

There are many different issues that can cause spinal curvature. Genetics are a factor. Some types of dwarfism can cause the bones to grow abnormally, resulting in a curved spine. Osteoperosis (a condition that results in brittle bones) can cause the spine to curve. Being overweight or obese can put excess pressure on the spine, causing it to curve in an unusual way. Birth defects, spine injuries, and tumors can also cause the spine to curve.

Curved Spine Symptoms and Treatment

Some people who have a slight curvature to their spines may never notice any symptoms, and may not need treatment. Other people may notice back pain, discomfort, fatigue while exercising, discomfort while sleeping or lying down, uneven shoulder blades or hip bones, and visible unnatural curves in the upper half of their bodies.

Chiropractic care can help to ease the symptoms associated with a spinal curve. Keeping the spine aligned, performing joint mobility exercises, and discussing lifestyle changes can all help a person with a curved spine have more symptom free days. Chiropractic care is a great alternative to more invasive medical procedures.
