Making Sense of Spinal Stenosis

treatment for spinal stenosis in YorkvilleIf you have been diagnosed with a condition known as spinal stenosis, you may be wondering whether you will have to undergo major surgery for it. While some cases might indeed require such methods, many patients can find relief through non-invasive alternatives. Here at Advanced Physical Medicine of Yorkville, we employ chiropractic treatment to help stenosis sufferers experience less pain and more efficient nerve function.

Spinal stenosis is a progressive narrowing of the spinal canal, the bony enclosure that encases the spinal cord and/or the nerve roots that extend from it. In some cases the vertebral bones overgrow (bone spurs), while in others the nearby ligaments become thicker, or a herniated disc protrudes into the spinal canal. Whatever the reason for the narrowing, the result is that the spinal cord or nerve roots become impinged, which inhibits their ability to route signals between the brain and the body. Stenosis of the lumbar spine can cause leg pain when standing or walking, while stenosis in the cervical spine can cause limb weakness, tingling sensations, or even bowel and bladder problems.

How Our Yorkville Chiropractor Can Help

Our Yorkville chiropractor, Dr. Berkey, can employ one of two natural techniques to reduce the symptoms caused by this ailment: chiropractic adjustment and non-surgical spinal decompression. Adjustment shifts the alignment of the vertebrae to remove pressure from herniated discs and impinged nerves. This allows normal communication within the body to resume, relieving your numbness, tingling, pain or weakness.

Non-surgical spinal decompression achieves similar results by creating more vertical space within the spinal column, applying a computer-controlled degree of distraction force. This slight stretching motion creates a vacuum that pulls herniated discs inward, away from nearby nerves. We use a highly advanced decompression table, the DRX9000, to bring relief to about 90 percent of the patients we treat -- and we have treated over 10,000 of them. If you want to be in that number and find the relief you have been looking for, contact our office for a consultation!
