Back Pain Treatment & Prevention with Our Yorkville Chiropractor Team

Our Yorkville chiropractor team would like to take some time and clear up some common misconceptions about lifting-related injuries, educate our community on how to prevent such injuries from occurring, and let people know how we can help if an injury does befall you or a loved one.

5 Tips for Preventing a Back Injury While Lifting

Accidents happen, especially on the job. But there are plenty of things you can do in the workplace or at home to reduce your risk of sustaining a back injury while lifting.

  1. Know the weight of the object you're lifting—and know your own limitations. No one ever got very far by trying to be a hero, attempting to lift something way too heavy on their own, and then just hurting themselves in the process! Before you pick something up, know how heavy it is. If it's beyond your ability to lift safely on your own, ask for help.
  2. Avoid twisting and bending your spine while carrying. The safest position for your spine when lifting any object—whether it's a pencil or a large cardboard box—is what's called a neutral spine: flat back, chest up, and no twisting.
  3. Use available tools and equipment at your disposal. This includes dollies and even mechanical lifts. Also, whenever possible, place heavy items in convenient places to avoid having to reach too low or too high to get it.
  4. Use those legs! Bend your knees and lift the object primarily from standing up through your legs, rather than lifting with your back.
  5. Keep the object close to your body. The closer the item is to you, the less relative force imposed on your body.
