Chiropractic Care for Scoliosis Back Pain

Scoliosis is a condition of the spine that can cause back pain, discomfort, and difficulty with certain movements. While the level of care it requires depends on the severity of the condition, a chiropractor can help to minimize the pain and discomfort while promoting healing.

What Exactly Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine is curved sideways, creating an “S” or “C” shape. Scoliosis typically impacts the upper or lower spine. It can also affect the middle of the spine, though this is less common. However, scoliosis in the middle of the spine is more likely to worsen over time.

Scoliosis has been known to affect people of all ages and genders, but it is more common in some than others. Women are more likely to suffer from scoliosis than men. And while both babies and adults may experience it, those ages 10 to 12 are most likely to be diagnosed with it.

Causes

Scoliosis is sometimes related to medical troubles such as muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy. It may be due to a birth abnormality. Other times, an injury can cause a temporary or permanent case of scoliosis. Poor posture over a long period can make a mild case of scoliosis worse.

How to Recognize It

Scoliosis is not always obvious. When it is, it is usually because the sufferer seems to have uneven shoulders or hips, he or she leans to one side or their head stays at a consistent angle, or there is another visible signal. More often,  scoliosis is discovered due to chronic back pain, trouble with exercise and other movements, or trouble breathing.

Treatment

Your treatment will depend on the severity of the curvature of your spine and your stage of bone development. Some cases require little to no treatment, while others require a brace, physical therapy, or surgery.

Chiropractic care can be used in concert with other treatments to decrease pain, reduce inflammation, and improve movement. Spinal manipulation by a chiropractor can set the spine back in place. Stretches, exercises, and massage therapy improve the muscles that support the spine, helping it remain in the correct position.
