Getting Help for a Lifting Injury

Unfortunately, back injuries only seem to matter to the folks who suffer from them. While many of us are taught some general safety tips, we blindly lift heavy materials and torque and twist without a care in the world until our backs blow out screaming painfully, “no more!” And then we know how bad a back injury can be to the rest of our lives. Our staff at Advanced Physical Medicine of Yorkville can diagnose and treat lifting injuries.

Back Injuries are Very Preventable

The fact is, back injuries are mostly preventable and many businesses apply work ergonomics for this reason. Some do happen without any advanced warning, such as a car accident injury to the neck, but most are due to the fact that we just don’t prepare ourselves before physically doing something. Heavy lifting is one of the most common of preventable injuries there are to stress our backs.

It seems simple enough; if we have the strength, we lift things. We’ve been doing this function since childhood and our earliest memories. However, our backs were not designed to take on direct load-lifting. So, when we lift, we frequently make the mistake of misusing our backs to be the power source.

How Our Backs Show Injury

Back injuries typically occur due to:

  • A muscle injury – Usually a tear or strain of a muscle group over-exerted.
  • A disc injury – The strain on the back causes a cushioning disc to shift or bulge out pressing against a nerve.
  • A joint injury – The load puts too much pressure on a joint connected to the back and it fails.

Prevention can usually avoid all of these situations by never bending the back but lowering and rising at the knees and hips, moving straight upward and never changing the back position.
