Sciatica

You've probably heard of sciatica. Sciatica is painful, but it's rarely serious. Often, when risk factors are addressed early, sciatica can be prevented altogether. At Advanced Physical Medicine of Yorkville in Sarasota, our chiropractor is here to help you understand the risk factors for sciatica.

Pregnancy

Pregnant women are at extremely high risk for sciatica pain. Most pregnant women experience sciatica toward the end of their pregnancies. The bigger a baby grows, the more pressure will be placed on an expecting mother’s sciatic nerve. Regular chiropractic care is a safe, effective way to treat sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy.

Back Injury

In between each of your vertebrae is a small, soft disc which cushions the movement of the spine. Sometimes, back injuries can cause these discs to bulge or herniate, creating pressure on the sciatic nerve. This can lead to pain that radiates far from the area where the injury occurred. If you've hurt your back and are experiencing pain down the side of one leg, it's likely that a bulging or herniated disc is affecting your sciatic nerve.

Excess Body Weight

Being overweight or obese can create pressure on the spine, which can result in pressure on the sciatic nerve. If you're overweight, our chiropractor can work with you to develop a lifestyle change plan that can help you begin to lose weight and relieve some of the pressure on your spine. Many people find that as they lose weight, other health issues improve as well.
